An NFL game has 60 minutes of regulation game-clock time, but stoppages and breaks make the real viewing window longer and variable.
How long does an NFL game last?
The short answer to “How long is an NFL game?” has two parts: regulation has 60 minutes of game-clock time, while the real-time viewing window is usually a little over three hours. The clock and the time between the scheduled kickoff and the final play are not the same measurement.
That difference makes game length a practical question when planning around an NFL broadcast, a meal, or travel in Milpitas, near Great Mall or Calaveras Boulevard, or elsewhere in the Bay Area. ESPN’s review of Google Trends NFL searches listed “How long is an NFL game?” among the leading NFL questions outside the United States; the underlying trend data was pulled in July 2025. For the official clock structure, the current 2026 NFL Rulebook is the primary source.

The official NFL game clock: 60 minutes
The NFL’s 2026 Rulebook, Rule 4, defines regulation length as 60 minutes divided into four periods of 15 minutes each. That is the amount of playing time shown on the game clock across the four quarters; it is not a promise that the whole event will finish 60 minutes after kickoff.
The rulebook also sets intervals between periods and a halftime break. In the 2026 rules, halftime is 13 minutes, and the first-to-second and third-to-fourth-period intermissions are at least two minutes. If the score is tied when regulation ends, the game can continue into overtime under Rule 16.
Why the real-time NFL viewing window is longer
The game clock does not simply count down without interruption. The NFL rulebook specifies clock stoppages for situations including an incomplete forward pass, a runner going out of bounds, a change of possession, the two-minute warning, and an official timeout. Charged team timeouts and halftime also interrupt the playing time. Broadcast breaks add time beyond the game clock as well.
A useful planning estimate is a little over three hours for the live NFL game, but that is not a guaranteed end time. The game situation and stoppages vary, and overtime can extend the event beyond regulation. Lineups’ updated 2026 NFL guide gives a similar real-time estimate; the NFL rulebook remains the authority on the clock itself.
| What you are measuring | NFL timing detail | |---|---| | Regulation game clock | 60 minutes total | | Regulation structure | Four 15-minute quarters | | Halftime | 13 minutes under the 2026 rulebook | | End time after kickoff | Variable; stoppages, breaks, and possible overtime add elapsed time |
Scheduled kickoff is not a guaranteed finish time
A kickoff listing tells you when the game is scheduled to start; it does not supply an exact end time. If you are coordinating a group, catching the end of a game, or arranging a ride, leave room after the listed start instead of calculating the finish as exactly 60 minutes later.
For a live game, follow the current score and game clock through the official NFL or team game center. That tells you where play stands, but a close finish, stoppages, or overtime can still change when the broadcast ends. This guide is about timing in general, not a forecast for any specific NFL matchup.
Planning an NFL game outing in Milpitas or San Jose
If you are comparing an NFL viewing plan in Milpitas, near Great Mall, on Calaveras Boulevard, or around San Jose, remember that a venue’s schedule and its plan for a particular game are separate questions. A screen listing or a scheduled kickoff does not confirm which matchup, channel or streaming service will be available, whether the sound will be on, or when a venue will close.
